Zanshin Gulf Coast Jiu-Jitsu Academy Case Study

More than Martial Arts

Zanshin Gulf Coast Jiu Jitsu Website Screenshot“Gulf Coast. Zen. Flip-Flops.” That’s how Corey Richardson, owner and head instructor at Zanshin Gulf Coast Jiu-Jitsu Academy, described the look and feel of his website when we sat down with him for a design consultation. Now, it’s at this point where most web designers would either groan or panic. Not GroundSwell – we aim to please, and that’s what we did.

Getting the Right Imagery

I grew up in Ocean Springs, MS and spent much of my time there with friends fishing, sailing, hiking, camping on the barrier islands, and soaking in the sunsets. So, when Corey said the words Gulf Coast, Zen, and flip-flops, I thought back to some of my memories from those days – the sun setting on the harbor, cranes and pelicans on washed out pier posts, and marsh grass silhouetted by the warm glow of dusk. What could be more Gulf Coast Zen than that?! We put those images into Zanshin’s header and footer to give his website the laid-back relaxed feel Corey was after.

Add to that the professional photos GroundSwell took during one of Zanshin’s classes, and the design came together.

So, what does all this have to do with Jiu-Jitsu?

Getting the Right Vibe

For Corey, his academy is more than just a place to learn and practice martial arts. It’s a community of close friends that are like family to him and each other. He wants his students to get a great workout and learn how to defend themselves competently, but he also wants them to feel at home.

Chris and Charlie at Groundswell are some of the most professional and accommodating guys I’ve ever worked with. They made sure that I understood and was fully satisfied with each process of building my website. My site reflects exactly what I had in my mind while making it extremely functional. When it comes to web design, I can’t picture working with anyone else. Groundswell will be the only guys getting my money. – Corey Richards, Owner and Head Instructor

Working with GroundSwell Web Designs has truly been an excellent experience. Our website represents exactly the theme we wanted it to and looks fantastic! The team’s response to our ideas and special requests has been very positive and enthusiastic. Any issues with the site were resolved quickly and effectively. The feedback we have received about the Zanshin Gulf Coast Jiu-jitsu Academy website has all been very positive. Thank you Chris and Charlie for creating such a well-structured and easy to navigate website for us! I highly recommend GroundSwell Web Designs to anyone who is contemplating developing a new website or making updates to a current one. – Kim Williams, Academy Manager

Once we had the right imagery in the design, we matched the website’s copy to Corey’s feelings about his Academy, paying homage to his lineage and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, while still conveying to people visiting his site that Zanshin Gulf Coast Jiu-Jitsu Academy was the best on the coast, but not an in-your-face gym.

GroundSwell Kicks Some…er…I mean…We Rule!

Gulf Coast. Zen. Flip-Flops. It’s a little puzzling at first, but it makes sense. GroundSwell was able to get to the bottom of it because we invested time with Corey and his business, just like we do with all our clients. I’m really glad we made Corey happy because, as laid back and friendly as he is, we don’t really want to be on the bad side of a world-class medal winning Jiu-Jitsu fighter.
